That’s a heavy topic because there are so many different explanations for these two different things. When you google it, you get a bunch of answers that still leave you scratching your head.

Even for me, the lines were blurred. But then a lightbulb went off. It’s really simple actually.

Branding is the PULL. Marketing is the PUSH

Branding is everything that you do to PULL your ideal client/audience. Marketing is everything that you do to PUSH your ideal client/audience to your brand.

Here goes a quick definition of Marketing

Marketing is the process of using various tools and strategies to promote, educate and influence your ideal client to buy or believe in your product or service.

Now for the Branding definition

Branding is a marketing practice. You build it around your values, culture, messaging, and visuals.

All of those things should create a strong positive perception of your brand in the minds of your ideal clients. That is where the PULL comes into play.

The golden rules for marketing and branding.

  • Marketing helps you get a potential client’s attention.
  • Branding helps you keep their attention.
  • Marketing DRIVES traffic awareness, leads, engagement & sales
  • Branding BUILDS recognition, trust & loyalty
  • Marketing is what you say.
  • Branding is what is remembered.

The great thing about branding is that what they remember can be defined by you.

What you put in is what they get out. It all goes back to your values, culture, messaging, and visuals.

Every piece of content that you put out there, even a simple Pinterest graphic or an Instagram post is saying something about your brand. How you say it (messaging) and how it looks (visuals) is building a perception of your brand.

And guess what? You can control that perception through your very own unique brand strategy.

For myself, I am obsessed with branding a little more than marketing. But both are equally important, you have to do both to scale your business.
