Lights are set, cameras are rolling, and your brand is ready to shine! A brand shoot is an exciting opportunity to capture the essence of your business, elevate your visual presence, and create a lasting impression on your audience. I’m sure you can agree that brand photos are an important asset to any business. In this ultimate guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to ensure your next brand shoot is a blockbuster success. So, take a seat, with a notepad (you’re gonna need it)

1. Define Your Brand’s Visual Identity

Setting the stage for success before the cameras start clicking, it’s essential to establish your brand’s visual identity. Define your brand’s personality, aesthetics, and key elements that represent your unique style. I’m sure you are aware that Pinterest is a great place to get the creative juices flowing and start brainstorming ideas. Pin wardrobe, hairstyles, nails, makeup, sets/studios, props, the list is endless. Everything you pin can be a guiding light for your brand shoot, ensuring that every shot captures the essence of your business and resonates with your target audience.

2. Assemble Your Dream Team

Hire the right photographer and videographer. Be sure to look at their work and make sure their style and editing match what you are looking for. Talk to them and clearly explain your vision. More than likely they will have packages that include planning and recommendations of stylists, and makeup artists, who can bring your vision to life. One thing I can’t recommend enough is to hire a designated creative director. Someone whose entire job is to make sure all the planned shots and scenes are taken and to keep everything on schedule. (Especially if you are renting as hourly studio space or venue)

3. Time Is Of The Essence

Efficient planning and scheduling are the secret weapons behind a successful brand shoot. Map out a detailed timeline, allowing ample time for each aspect of the shoot, from hair and makeup to wardrobe changes and location transitions. Give everyone who will be helping you with your shoot a timeline, it goes a long way and everyone will be on the same page. With a well-structured schedule, you’ll ensure a smooth production process and keep your team energized and focused.

4. Location, Location, Location

Whether it’s a sleek studio, a bustling cityscape, or a serene natural setting, select a backdrop that aligns with your brand’s personality and message. If you have multiple locations then wardrobe changes can diversify your final images. Remember, a well-chosen location adds depth and you can tell your own story that enhances your photos.

5. Wardrobe & Prop Magic

Did you know that on movie sets that the wardrobe and prop teams do a ton of research for every single piece that the actors wear to fit the direction of the movie? I’m not necessarily suggesting that you make it your full-time job to find the perfect outfit and props, but you do want to carefully curate outfits that align with your brand’s image and message. For example, if you are a “fun” health/fitness coach then it would be soo on-brand and cool to have a photo of you taking a bite out of a head of broccoli and wearing bright-colored athletic clothes.

Props should essentially fit into 2 categories

  • 1. Profesional Props (things you need for your job)
  • 2. Personal Things (objects that you love and speak to your personality)

Here is a list of props

  • Food
  • Business Supplies
  • Newspaper(these are on trend rn)
  • Clothing Accessories (Hats, Scarfs)
  • Thinks specific to your business (ex. MUA – Makeup Brushes, Photographer – Camera)

Pay attention to color schemes, textures, and styles that enhance your brand’s personality. These elements can add layers of creativity, storytelling, and visual appeal to your images and videos. As an added bonus, buy clothes that are high quality and that you can use again! Remember, wardrobe and prop choices can make or break your brand shoot.

6. Light It Up Baby!

Set the right mood. Carefully consider the lighting techniques that will enhance your brand’s message. Play with shadows, and experiment with natural or artificial lighting. Understanding how to manipulate light is key. Soft, diffused lighting can create a gentle and inviting atmosphere, while dramatic and directional lighting adds depth and creates a sense of intrigue. Your photographer should be the main lead for lighting knowledge, but if you are looking to create a specific look (maybe something you found on Pinterest) you should know what lighting you would need to accomplish the look.

7. Candid is the New Cool

While posed shots are important, don’t forget to capture authentic moments that showcase the genuine essence of your brand. Candid shots and action shots can add a human touch, allowing your audience to connect with the real faces behind your business. Encourage your team to be themselves, have fun, and let their personalities shine through the lens.

Pro tip: Let your photographer and videographer know that you want a balance of posed shots and organic interactive shots.

8. Your Brand Shoot Is In Stock

Of course, you need photos of yourself, but did you ever think you need some still-life action? Well, you absolutely do. Branded stock photos are great to use on your website and social media when you don’t always want a photo of yourself or your team. Ask your photographer and videographer to take a few shots of your props in different scenes.

BONUS Tip- Don’t forget to record some BTS footage of the shoot to share on social media! It looks cool and you can use the same footage on your website.

That’s A Wrap! Lights fade, cameras stop rolling, and your brand shoot comes to an end. But hopefully, with all the tips you picked up here, your brand shoot will be a success! Beyond that, you will love the photos and they will embody your brand perfectly.
